It’s a rainy Saturday in Brisbane today, so I’m indulging in online casual games with great music: music puzzles or just atmospheric music itself.
1. Auditorium
Auditorum is a physics puzzle game in which you direct streams of particles though gates to create brilliant soundscapes. The music is lush, ambient, and slow with contrasting staccato and legato passages performed with soft string-like pads and piano. The levels are natural seasons, so the music is related to each season.
2. Music Catch 1 and 2
Music Catch and Music Catch 2 are physics puzzle games in which you need to catch coloured shapes that appear in time with the music.
3. Sugar, Sugar
In Sugar, Sugar, another physics puzzle game, sugar pours out of an area on one part of the screen and you need to draw lines to direct it into a cup on another part of the screen. The music is a kind of uber-chill jazz-funk.
4. The Man With The Invisible Trousers
The Man With The Invisible Trousers is yet another terrific physics puzzle game. You guide the man around rooms–sometimes by moving the room–to get out the door avoiding traps. The music is neo-jazz-noir.
5. Gravity God
Gravity God is a physics puzzle game in which you have powers to help you make it to the exits. The musically interesting thing is that instead of a soundtrack the music is various piano sounds generated by your keyboard and mouse clicks.
6. Coma
Coma is a short but very atmospheric adventure-puzzle game with wonderfully kooky low-key/spooky musical themes.
7. Small Worlds
Small Worlds is really more simple exploration than a puzzle, but it has wonderful semi-classical and ambient electronic music and an interesting embroidered 8-bit look.
8. Yet One Word
Yet One Word has a phenomenal quiet eerie synthesised string and percussion soundtrack to go along with its unique movement method–you type words to move. Some of the words, and the questions asked, can be quite confronting.
Special Mentions
- Of course you’ve played Portal (and if not, it’s FREE now!) and heard the cute song Still Alive in the end credits, but have you played the completely awesome Portal: The Flash Version?
- Passage is not an online game, but it is an amazing and very heart-rending game in which you life an entire lifetime.
- Colour My World is a very short exploration game with a beautiful soft solo piano loop.
