"abstract": "A commentary on Housley and Dahl (2024), who show that role-based prompts for generative AI draw on vernacular resources of membership categorisation and action description, forming a networked hermeneutic of lay and professional sociology. From a human-computer interaction perspective, I outline three implications for designing generative AI for productivity. First, treating AI responses as enactments of that hermeneutic may improve explainability, supporting users' metacognition and the co-auditing of AI output. Second, AI's synthetic reflection of role-based behaviour opens new technomethodological inquiry, provided synthetic personas are not naïvely substituted for real people. Third, understanding role-based prompting could help teams collaborate, from coaching users to specify interactional stances to helping members understand the stances of absent colleagues.",
